"My Child Won’t Sit Safely During Their Lesson”

One of the very first skills we teach during swim lessons is how to sit safely on the wall while waiting for a turn. It may seem simple, but for many younger swimmers, it takes real practice.

Sitting safely helps children develop patience and—more importantly—builds critical water safety habits.

So why is it sometimes a challenge?

For some kids, the excitement of being in the water makes it tough to stay still. For others, nervousness may lead them to climb out or wander away. Both are totally normal reactions. With a little support at home, your child can learn to sit safely and confidently.

What Can Parents Do at Home to Help?

🗣 Set expectations early
Before the lesson even begins, talk with your child about what to expect. Let them know that being a “Super Swimmer” means sitting safely on the wall or bench while waiting for their turn. Keep your reminders calm and consistent—it makes a big difference!

🏠 Practice during family swim time
If you visit a pool outside of lessons, use the opportunity to reinforce safe sitting. Have your child sit on the edge for just a few moments, then invite them back in. Make it fun: pretend they’re “charging up their powers” or waiting for a superhero signal!

🎉 Celebrate small wins
Even a few seconds of calm sitting is progress. Celebrate it! A high-five, a cheer, or a proud “You did it!” can help that new habit stick.

Water safety starts with the little things—and sitting safely is one of the most important building blocks. With time, consistency, and a little bit of fun, your child will gain confidence, control, and stronger habits that set the stage for long-term swimming success.
